Towball Testing

The federal office of road safety planned to introduce a standard for 70mm towballs. Leslie Consulting was commissioned to analyse, design, manufacture and test the 70 mm towball intended for bi-directional fatigue loads to 2 million cycles as well as static load. The results of these tests formed the basis for the new ADR specification. Tests were performed at the University of Queensland Civil Engineering laboratories.

The towball test rig was modelled and production drawings were issued using Pro/ENGINEER. Test rig critical areas stresses were analysed using Pro/MACHANICA STRUCTURE. Fatigue tests were intermittently staged to allow the penetration crack tests to be performed. Static test ball strain gauges were used to measure stress strain behaviour.
